M’Hamid El Ghizlane sits at the southern tip of the Drâa Valley — the last village before the open Sahara begins. Arid, continental climate: hot dry days, cool to cold nights, and some of the lowest rainfall on earth — barely 41mm a year.
More than 300 days of sunshine a year. When rain comes, it’s a celebration for the nomads and their herds. The night sky, almost always clear, is one of the most star-filled in North Africa.

🌸 Spring — March to May: best season for trekking
March to May — spring is the most popular season for travellers from the UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, and North America. Days are warm without exhausting you. Nights are cool and clear. The morning and evening light reaches an almost unreal quality — photographers never leave empty-handed.
Desert vegetation greens up after the winter rains. Encounters with nomadic families become more frequent — some returning from their northern grazing grounds. Easter and spring half-term often fall right in the heart of the ideal window.
💧 Rain in March and April is rare but possible — and briefly turns the sand a deep, vivid ochre. Few travellers ever get to see it.

June to August — daytime temperatures in M’Hamid regularly hit 45°C (113°F). Multi-day camel treks and long walking expeditions are strongly discouraged.

🍂 Autumn — September to November: the golden season
September to November — the favourite season of experienced travellers seeking solitude. The dunes bathe in golden afternoon light. Temperatures are ideal for trekking and camel riding.
October and November are especially recommended — fewer visitors than spring, the same spectacular sky. UK half-term, Australian school holidays, and Canadian Thanksgiving often fall right in the sweet spot. Late October brings the Taragalte Festival — three days of Saharan music on the dunes.

M’Hamid El Ghizlane is the only village in Morocco to host three major desert festivals each year. If your dates align, your trip becomes something else entirely.
Taragalte Festival — late October / early November
The most iconic music festival in the Moroccan Sahara. Three days of Saharan blues, Tuareg music, poetry, and starlit concerts on the dunes. A nomadic camel caravan is organised each year as a prelude — for those who want to arrive at the festival from the desert itself. The 2025 edition ran from 31 October to 2 November. 2026 dates to be confirmed — always late October / early November.

International Nomad Festival — early April

June, July and August — multi-day camel treks and long walking expeditions are not recommended. Midday heat is simply unmanageable on foot.
In an air-conditioned 4×4, the desert is accessible year-round. Departures happen early morning and in the evening — the most beautiful light, the most bearable temperatures. The Sahara in summer is the least visited of the year — for those seeking absolute solitude, that’s actually the point.

🧭 Erg Chegaga or Erg Chebbi — which destination?
Many travellers hesitate between M’Hamid / Erg Chegaga and Merzouga / Erg Chebbi. The season plays a role in that choice.
Erg Chegaga from M’Hamid is accessible year-round by 4×4 — one of the least-visited major dune fields in Morocco. In high season (October–April), the contrast with Merzouga is striking: few people, no overcrowded fixed camps, untouched authenticity. The night sky is free from any light pollution — the Milky Way is visible in its full clarity.
Erg Chebbi from Merzouga is more accessible and more visited, particularly October to April. The density of fixed camps generates noticeable light pollution. In summer both destinations empty out — but Erg Chegaga remains wilder and more authentic.

🌬️ Wind in the desert — the chergui
In M’Hamid, the chergui — a hot, dry wind from the south-east — blows mainly from late spring through summer, usually in the afternoon. It can trigger brief sandstorms, reshape the dunes within hours, and lift spirals of sand into something spectacular.
