Why Choose This Erg Chegaga Camel Trek 6 Days Morocco?
Six days, complete transformation.
Erg Chegaga — also called Chigaga or Chgaga by the nomads — is one of the last great wild ergs of the Moroccan Sahara. Far from tourist routes, far from fixed camps, far from noise.
To reach Erg Chegaga from M’Hamid, you walk. Three days on foot, on the same tracks as the great trans-saharan caravans — salt, gold, spices between Timbuktu and Morocco. You walk in their footsteps. You sleep where they slept. You look at the same sky.
✅ 5 nights under the stars — far from any light pollution
✅ Native nomad guides — not trained for tourism
✅ Wild Erg Chegaga — great dunes far from the crowds
✅ Ancient trans-saharan caravan route — walk the millennial paths
✅ Nomadic pace — morning walk, afternoon rest, contemplation
✅ Desert cuisine — slow-cooked tajines, traditional sand-baked bread, ceremonial tea
✅ Saharan flora and fauna — fennec foxes, jerboas, tamarisks, acacias
✅ Oasis of Oum Laâlag — green miracle in the middle of the sand
✅ Erg chegaga camel trek no deposit — pay on arrival – we value trust over deposits
✅ Total disconnection — at the heart of Erg Chegaga, no signal
No touristic spectacle. No fake camp. Just you, the dromedaries, and the real Sahara—living the desert as ancient caravans did.

The Rhythm of Your Erg Chegaga Camel Trek — A Typical Day
No minute-by-minute schedule — the desert doesn’t like watches. Here is simply how the days unfold, naturally.
In the morning, the M’Hamid Erg Chegaga caravan sets off around 8-9am, when the light is golden and temperatures still cool. You walk about 3.5 hours at your own pace. The camels carry everything — tents, water, food. You walk light, mind free.

In the early afternoon, the bivouac is set up. Lunch in the shade, nap on the rugs, exploration of the surrounding dunes. The desert teaches you slowness — and you end up loving it.
In the late afternoon, you settle facing west. The sun descends. The sky blazes. Nobody speaks.
Night falls quickly in the desert. The fire crackles, the stars light up one by one, then by millions. The Milky Way crosses the sky like a river of light. You fall asleep beneath it — in a tent or under the open sky, your choice.
Your Itinerary — 6-Day Erg Chegaga Camel Trek from M’Hamid
Day 1 — M’Hamid → Rjal Dromadaire: the first steps
8:30am, Café La Rose du Sud, M’Hamid El Ghizlane. Lahsan and the team are there. The camels kneel while the bags are loaded. Then you walk — and the first step in the sand is always magical.
The dunes appear on the horizon. You discover the Saharan rhythm — different from anything you know. You walk on the same tracks as the great trans-saharan caravans for centuries, carrying salt, gold and spices between Timbuktu and Morocco.
The bivouac is set up at Rjal Dromadaire, named after the tall trees that resemble camel legs. First tajine filling the campsite with fragrance. First night under the infinite stars.
Day 2 — Towards Oued Laâtach: the vast spaces open up

The caravan resumes its route.
The desert opens like an ancient book. Lahsan stops sometimes to show an animal track in the Sahara Morocco desert — fennec fox, perhaps, or jerboa that danced in the night.
He has been reading these stories written in the sand since childhood.
Evening falls over Oued Laâtach — “the thirsty oued”. Its name whispers a story of water that left long ago.
Day 3 — Erg Chegaga: the great sea of sand
Today is special. You feel it from the moment you wake.
Your caravan reaches Erg Chegaga — also called Chigaga or Chgaga by the nomads. A sea of sand stretches as far as the eye can see, infinite and breathtaking. The dunes are tall, round, perfect. This is the real erg chegaga camel trek — from your feet, at sand level, no prior experience needed.
In the afternoon, free exploration in this ocean of sand. No signal here. Just you, the sand, and the immensity.

Day 4 — Oasis of Oum Laâlag: the miracle of water
The caravan leaves the sand towards the oasis of Oum Laâlag — a unique place, unknown to most tourist circuits. Then suddenly — water. Palm trees. The vivid green after so much infinite ochre is a miracle, every time.
You sit in the shade of the palm trees and listen to the water flow. The bivouac is set up at Oued El Ghareg, where small stones tell other stories.
Day 5 — Oued Rtimy: the gentleness of the acacias
Shorter day. The caravan slows down even further. You walk little, you contemplate much. The landscape slides towards Oued Rtimy and its acacias — these trees the nomads affectionately call talh. Their shade is precious, their presence soothing.
This is your last night in the desert. You live it fully.

Day 6 — Return to M’Hamid: the end of the Erg Chegaga trek
Last wake-up under stars slowly fading. A gentle mix of joy and melancholy.
After the last breakfast in the desert, the caravan takes the return path to M’Hamid El Ghizlane. One last lunch in the shade of the last trees. One last sweet tea with the team.
You return to M’Hamid with sand in your pockets — and the desert in your soul. That’s irreversible.
Desert Cuisine — A Journey in Flavours
In the desert, meals are not just food. They are rituals.
Every day on this erg chegaga camel trek Morocco, the fire crackles, spices fill the air, the tajine simmers slowly in the embers. The smell of fresh bread baked under the sand mingles with the scent of tea. Chicken, beef or vegetable tajines slow-cooked with patience. Generous couscous, grilled brochettes over wood fire, harira warming the cool nights. Fresh Moroccan salads, seasonal fruits, dates.

Breakfasts are hearty: warm bread, jam, honey, amlou, Berber crepes, omelette, cheese, fruit. Enough to fuel the morning walk.
Mint tea flows all day — poured from high to create a perfect foam. Each glass is a pause, a sharing. It is the soul of the desert in a steaming glass.
Vegetarian and vegan diets catered for — just let us know when booking.
Desert Nature — Flora and Fauna of the Moroccan Sahara
Flora — Extraordinary Survivors
The desert is not an empty sea of sand. It is a fragile ecosystem full of plants that defy drought — and that you discover step by step on this 6-day Morocco desert trek.
The colocynth (citrullus colocynthis) grows discreetly — bitter and toxic, yet it feeds the gazelles. The Sodom’s apple (Calotropis procera) is a strange shrub with thick leaves, fascinating to observe. Tamarisk trees survive on almost nothing, offering their precious shade to caravans. Acacias — talh for the nomads — dot the oueds with their generous silhouette. Date palms appear near oases, their presence always signalling underground water.
Fauna — Tracks and Magical Encounters
The desert is not silent. It teems with life — for those who know how to look.
Every morning, the sand reveals its silent diary. Tracks and footprints left during the cool night. Lahsan, our born nomad guide Erg Chegaga, teaches you to read them since childhood.
That delicate star-shaped line? A jerboa that danced under the moon — this adorable little rodent that hops like a mini-kangaroo. Those larger prints with marked claws? A desert hare on silent nocturnal patrol. And if you are very lucky — a fennec fox desert Morocco. This miniature fox with oversized ears is the living treasure of the Sahara. Shy, nocturnal, it rarely shows itself. Sometimes, at sunrise or sunset, it offers you its fleeting silhouette. Magical. Unforgettable.
The desert hedgehog
taller on its legs than its European cousins, with large ears — leaves its characteristic tracks in the sand.

Beetles walk a lot, leaving delicate little prints behind them. The skink — also called “sand fish” — undulates through the sand like water, fascinating to watch as it surfaces then plunges back. Agama lizards sunbathe on already-warm stones in the morning.
Sometimes, on the horizon, wild donkeys cross the desert, free and proud. Rarer still — wild camels. And during seasonal migrations, birds cross the sky: larks, wheatears, sometimes majestic raptors gliding in the pure air.
Scorpions and snakes — what you need to know: they exist, Lahsan will tell you frankly. In the cool season (October-April), low temperatures keep them inactive and discreet. One simple reflex: shake your shoes every morning. A nomadic habit that becomes second nature in a day.
