What to wear in the Sahara desert

The Sahara changes fast. Days are warm and sunny, evenings and nights can feel surprisingly cold, and close to freezing in winter. The trick is lightweight layers you can add or remove as the day goes by.

☀️ During the day: loose, breathable cotton or linen, long sleeves and light trousers, which are more practical than shorts or a dress on sand and on a camel. Add a hat and your cheche.

🌙 In the evening: a fleece or sweater, a windproof jacket for the fire, and warm long trousers.

👟 Shoes: closed shoes you’ve already walked in, for camel treks and desert walks. Skip sandals on the camel itself and keep them for camp. For 4×4 tours, comfortable closed shoes are usually enough.

Desert camping essentials

A night in the Sahara is a highlight of any Morocco desert trip. We provide tents and blankets, and a few personal items add comfort.

🛏 Sleeping. A warm sleeping bag rated to -5°C (23°F) is recommended from autumn to spring, even though we provide blankets. A bag liner adds an extra layer, and a headlamp helps you move around camp after dark.

🧼 Hygiene. Biodegradable wet wipes, hand sanitizer and a little saline solution if sand gets in your eyes.

🧼 Hand sanitizer. Useful for keeping hands clean during the journey.

🔋 Phone and tech. Electricity is limited in the remote desert and mobile signal can be weak or absent. Bring a high-capacity power bank (20,000 mAh or more) and download your music, books and maps before leaving M’Hamid El Ghizlane.

Your packing list by trip: camel trek or 4×4

🐪 Camel trek or walking trek in the Sahara

  • Closed shoes, already broken in, and blister plasters
  • Your water bottle at hand, refilled from our mineral water
  • A small daypack for the day, while your luggage travels by camel
  • A few extra clothes, because walking makes you sweat more than a vehicle

🚙 4×4 desert tour in Morocco

  • Comfortable closed shoes, no heavy boots needed
  • Sandals for bivouac evenings, feet free after a long day on the tracks
  • A power bank and a sand-proof phone pouch, because stops are frequent and photos irresistible
  • A warm layer, since desert nights are cold even after a day in the vehicle

What to leave at home for your Morocco desert trip

❌ Too many clothes: two or three changes are enough, so choose versatile layers
❌ Heavy toiletries: wipes and simple essentials are more practical
❌ Jewellery and valuables: the Sahara is about landscapes and encounters
❌ Hair dryers and styling tools: electricity is limited, and the desert breeze takes care of the rest

Optional extras: binoculars, a travel journal, a book or protected e-reader, a card game for convivial evenings, a camera with an extra memory card.

The essentials you can’t pack: your curiosity about nomadic life, your wish to slow down, your openness to real encounters, your smile, and the joy of sharing tea, stories and stars. We’ll bring the rest.

More than a desert tour: a journey with ADN Sahara is about sharing the nomadic way of life and seeing the Sahara through local eyes. You’re welcomed like family, with generosity and the warmth of desert traditions. Our love of this land has been passed down since childhood, our patience is infinite because the desert is never rushed, and we respect your pace, your silences and your wonder. Technology and money: Morocco desert trip essentials

Can I charge my phone in the Sahara desert?

How much cash should I bring to the Moroccan desert?

How much cash to bring to the Moroccan desert depends on you, as water, meals, tents and blankets are all included in your trip. Cash only covers personal extras: souvenirs from M’Hamid, a tip for your guides if you’d like to leave one, and small purchases along the way. Bring dirhams in small notes, as there is no card payment in the desert, and keep a modest amount on you rather than a large sum. Souvenirs are what tend to add up, so bring a little more if you love to shop.
